History of BWBD.
After the catastrophic floods of 1954 and 1955, the East Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (EPWAPDA) was formed in 1959 on the recommendation of the Krug Mission under the auspices of the United Nations in 1958 to reduce flood damage and increase food production. The present Bangladesh Water Development Board (BAPUBO) as the water wing of EPWAPDA has implemented flood control, drainage and irrigation projects in the country and initiated activities as the main body in water resources management to increase the production of agricultural and fishery resources. After independence, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BAPUBO) emerged as a fully autonomous body with the same mandate as per Order No. 59 of His Excellency the President of 1972. Subsequently, the Bapaubo Act, 2000 was enacted in line with the National Water Policy-1999 in a series of reforms and restructuring. Under this Act, the top policy of the Board is being determined and managed by a 13-member Water Council headed by the Hon'ble Minister, Ministry of Water Resources.
